The release of this year’s crop of Baseball America prospect rankings for the Washington Nationals brought tens of people to twitter to discuss the findings, and argue their merits. Where did Michael Burgess go? Or Destin Hood? Is a starting second baseman considered a prospect still? I do not know.
Something the ever brilliant Joe Posnanski wrote about the Grienke trade came to mind. It was a something that Bill James had told him a while ago, and that was, that every team has a “top 10” prospect list. The Yankees. The Red Sox. The Royals. and the Nationals. People tend to look at these lists and say, “well, he was their number 1 prospect, so it was ok we traded our starting right fielder for them”. Yet, all lists are not equal, and when they release the league wide ranking of prospects, and we’re all searching for Derek Norris on the big list, and we have to flip a few pages to get there, we’ll know that fact all too well.
